Bald Eagle

Did You Know?

As we celebrate America’s history, it is interesting to note how the Bald Eagle became America’s National Emblem.

Benjamin Franklin, John Adams and Thomas Jefferson served on the committee that picked the eagle. The eagle was chosen as it represents unlimited freedom. Thomas Jefferson wanted the turkey, because he felt it was a more respectable bird.

Bald eagles have few natural enemies and live only in North America. They mate for life. It is a felony to shoot an eagle.

Celebrate the Holiday Safely!

Enjoy celebrating the heritage of our country with fireworks, but KNOW YOUR FIREWORKS! The Consumer Product Safety Commission and the National Council on Fireworks Safety offer the following tips:

  • FireworksBuy from reliable, licensed fireworks sellers.
  • Store in a cool, dry place.
  • Ignite fireworks outdoors.
  • Light one at a time.
  • Have a bucket of water, or water hose, nearby.
  • Never re-ignite malfunctioning fireworks.
  • Dispose of fireworks properly.
  • Children under age 16 should only use fireworks with adult supervision.
  • Never shoot fireworks in metal or glass containers.
  • Be particularly careful with sparklers and children – sparklers can reach temperatures up to 1800ºF, and can be very dangerous if used improperly.

Summer Favorites Shopping, Handling and Storing Tips

The Cool Chef has these suggestions for storing and handling ice cream and novelties:

  • Make the ice cream aisle your last stop; keep your frozen purchases in a separate section of the cart.
  • For better insulation, pack your ice cream in an additional brown paper bag for the ride home.
  • Don’t allow ice cream to repeatedly soften and refreeze.
  • Keep lids very tight; don’t store frozen treats on freezer doors where temperatures may fluctuate more.
