Goals:
- To familiarize
children with the Food Guide Pyramid
- To make
children and their families aware that frozenand refrigerated
food products are available for each food group on the Pyramid.
Background
Information: The Food Guide Pyramid was developed in
1992 by the U.S. Department of Agriculture to replace the classic
"four food groups." Each section of the Food Guide Pyramid
suggests recommended daily servings of each food group type. Ask
children why it is important to know this nutrition information.
You'll
Need: Reproducible Panel 3;
craft paper; tape or glue stick.
Activity:
Print out Reproducible Panel 3. Read
together the instructions on the Panel and interpret the Cool Clues.
As children complete the activity, discuss their answers. As a follow-up
activity, draw an oversized blank Food Guide Pyramid on craft paper.
Identify each section of the Guide with its appropriate food group
label. Then, invite children to collect pictures of frozen and refrigerated
food favorites (from magazines and food packages) and mount them
in the correct section to create a Frozen & Refrigerated Food
Guide Pyramid.
